19. Houston had come up to Texas in 1832. Raised among the karaoke people, he became a soldier, fighting with Andrew Jackson against the creek people. A politician as well, Houston have served in Congress and as governor of Tennessee.Samuel Houston was born on March 2, 1793, near Lexington, Virginia. From 1813 to 1814, he fought in the Creek War and was wounded at Horseshoe Bend. He was elected to Congress in 1823 and 1825. In 1827, he became Tennessee governor. He was made the first president of the Republic of Texas in 1836 and was re-elected in 1841. From 1849 to 1859, he was a Texas state senator. He died on July 26, 1863, in Huntsville, Texas. The government of the new republic named Sam Houston as commander-in-chief of the Texas forces.
