Leadership by Mind Map: Leadership

1. Ralph enjoys being a leader and bossing people around

1.1. Ralph pushed Piggy to one side. "I was chief, and you were going to do what I said.

1.2. Something deep in Ralph spoke for him. "I'm chief. I'll go. Don't argue."

2. Jack represents power being taken and Ralph represents power being given

2.1. Jack's face swam near him. "And you shut up! Who are you, anyway? Sitting there telling people what to do. You can't hunt, you can't sing—" "I'm chief. I was chosen." "Why should choosing make any difference? Just giving orders that don't make any sense—"

3. The Lord of the Flies captures power indirectly

3.1. “I’m warning you. I’m going to get angry. D’you see? You’re not wanted. Understand? We are going to have fun on this island. Understand? We are going to have fun on this island! So don’t try it on, my poor misguided boy, or else–”

4. Ralph used his leaddership skills for things such as building a fire, whereas Jack uses it for silly things

4.1. Jack spoke. "Give me a drink." Henry brought him a shell and he drank, watching Piggy and Ralph over the jagged rim. Power lay in the brown swell of his forearms: authority sat on his shoulder and chattered in his ear like an ape.

5. Napoleon never gave up

5.1. Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools.

6. Napoleon showed great leadership skills

6.1. I am sometimes a fox and sometimes a lion. The whole secret of government lies in knowing when to be the one or the other.

7. Jack thinks he should have the power because he's always had it.

7.1. "Shut up," said Ralph absently. He lifted the conch. "Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things." "A chief! A chief!" "I ought to be chief," said Jack with simple arrogance, "because I'm chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp."

7.2. “Who thinks Ralph oughtn’t to be chief?” He looked expectantly at the boys ranged around, who had frozen. Under the palms there was deadly silence. “Hands up?” said Jack strongly, “whoever wants Ralph not to be chief?”

8. Ralph takes account of his people's wants and needs

8.1. Ralph waved again for silence. "Jack's in charge of the choir. They can be—what do you want them be?" "Hunters." Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with shy liking.

9. Ralph "loses" his leadership for a while and everybody follows Jack

9.1. "A fire! Make a fire!" At once half the boys were on their feet. Jack clamored among them, the conch forgotten. "Come on! Follow me!" The space under the palm trees was full of noise and movement. Ralph was on his feet too, shouting for quiet, but no one heard him. All at once the crowd swayed toward the island and was gone—following Jack.

10. Napoleon seeked of glory through his leadership

10.1. Death is nothing, but to live defeated and inglorious is to die daily.

11. Napoleon was devoted

11.1. Power is my mistress. I have worked too hard at her conquest to allow anyone to take her away from me.
