5. Discuss the benefits and disadvantages which technological development is likely to have upon education in the near future. (Nov 1997)

Benefits

Benefit1 (point): Technology improves communication between educators (teachers) and students)

eg. pictures in powerpoints

Elaboration: Being able to show images and pictures in powerpoint slides enable teachers to communicate ideas more effectively. A picture speaks a thousand words.

R: Technology developments enhance education medium, allowing for better communication during lessons.

Benefit 2 (point): Technological development: more user friendly

eg. touch screens

Elaboration Touch screens enable teachers to input and retrieve data faster and more efficiently, making lesson pace faster (decrease time wastage)

R: Technology developments allow for more efficient trasmittion of data.

Benefit 3 (point 3) : Technological development: microphones and speakers

eg. Larger lecture theatres with more students.

Elaboration: With improvements in microphones and speakers, lecturers are able to speak to a larger audience, hence more students can participate in the same lecture without having a need for the lecturer to strain his voice. This decreases the need for repeated lectures for different classes and increases efficiency of the curriculum.

R: The development on the audio trasmittion devices will enable the lessons to be delivered to larger groups of students, improving the college's efficiency in its curriculum time.

Disadvantage

Alternative forms of education facilitated by advanced technology, such as home based E-learning, will replace traditional forms of educational institutions.

Point:Such news forms of education cannot provide enough opportunities for students to interact and develop their interpersonal skills

Elaboration: In school, there are plenty of opportunities, such as CCAs, Intra-school competitions and sports days, for students to interact and make friends. However, in virtual learnings, interactions are very limited and usually people cannot feel the sense of intimacy and closeness in virtual interactions,as compared with face-to-face communication.

Point: Also, quality of learning will be undermined as there are very limited interactions between teachers and students during the virtual learning.

Elaboration: In virtual learning, lack of interactions disabled teachers to check whether the students are engaged or follwing the lessons. Students also cannot clarify their quaries with teachers as fast as they can in school.

Disadvantage

P: Yes it helps to make teaching and learning more convenient but yet at the same time we grow more and more complacent because of the development.

E: When the technology fails us there is neither a back up plan nor do we know what to do for we are so used to having it around us

E: For example some teachers are so used to using powerpoints for lessons. When their laptop has a problem or when the projector is not working, they spend most of the time trying to fix it. They could just use the whiteboard but simply they are not confident of doing so and most of the times when they use it they do quite a bad job a teaching thus affecting what the student learns.

R: This shows that how used to we are in having technology around us to the extent we forget the basics.

Disadvatage

P: With technological advancements comes along fun and exciting distractions such as video games, online videos and the internet, which would surely divert most students away from their main goal in life: to study.

E: Living in this hectic and fast-paced society, most students already find it hard to focus on their studies, what more if they are showered with gadgets that feature distractions like these as a form of entertainment?

E: A study conducted by a psychologist at Denison University showed that owning a game system could hinder academic development, especially for young boys. The results show that boys given a PlayStation II are slower to progress in their reading and writing skills and have more learning problems reported by their teachers than those not given a system.

R: Hence, this shows that if students decide to spend more of their time pursuing games and movies and other non-school-related interests, this might out a toll onto their results. At the end of the day, the grades a student gets for an exam is proportional to the amount of time he puts into studying for it. As technological advancements tend to pull the students’ attention away from their studies, this might hinder education in future.

Disadavantage

P-The development of the emotional quotient (EQ) of students is compromised

E-The purpose of a school is to develope the emotional well-being of a child. What society needs are leaders with the ability to think with the interests of others in mind. With little personal interaction, students risk becoming 'robots' with academic ability but no interactive ability

E- With the introduction of technology that enables students and teachers to communicate real time, one 'advantage' is that a physical classroom will no longer be necessary. However communication opportunities become even more scarce.

R- In the working world, good EQ and communication skills is necessary for job interviews and presentations etc. Students who spend time using technology lose touch with the real world, as the technological world lacks the 'human touch' aspect. Students may not be able to express themselves effetively without adequate opportunities to practice in real life ie. via daily conversations and discussions held in school.
