2. Timeline (Independence For Texas)

2.1. 1803- Conflict in Texas began

2.2. 1819- In the Adam Onis Treaty, the United States agreed to drop any further claim to the region of Texas, New Mexico, and California.

2.3. 1821- Moses Austin applied for and received his first land grant.

2.4. 1823-1853: Mexico passed three colonization laws.

2.5. 1830- Americans in Texas far outnumbered Mexicans. Also the Mexican government issued a decree to stop all immigration from the United States.

2.6. 1833- General Santa Anna became president of Mexico.

2.7. 1835- Davy Crockett lost his seat in congress.

2.8. During 1835- Unrest grew among Texans and usually resulted in open conflict.

2.9. 1836- Santa Anna marched his army north and found the Alamo.

2.10. March, 1836- Mexicans fired a cannon through the Alamo's walls and the Mexicans launched an all-out attack.

2.11. March 2nd 1836- American settlers and tejanos in Texas firmly declared independence from Mexico and formed the republic of Texas.

2.12. September 1836- Texas elected Sam Houston as their president.

2.13. December 29th 1845- Texas officially became a state in the United States.

5. Texas Independence

5.1. -Davy Crockett went southwest to Texas instead of returning to Tenessee

5.2. Americans thought that the Louisiana Purchase included Texas, even though Mexico owned Texas.

5.3. Austin recruited 300 families to live in Texas, but as settling continued, the American population in Texas outnumbered the Mexican population.

5.4. In 1830 the Mexican government said that Americans could no longer immigrate to Texas.

5.5. The Americans gathered together to fight against Mexico because of what they thought were unfair rules.

5.6. Santa Anna sent an army into Texas to punish the Americans for criticizing them.

5.7. After the many battles that the Americans and Mexicans fought against each other, the Americans ended up winning the war.

6. Stephen F. Austin

6.1. Born on November 3rd, 1793 in Austinville, VA

6.2. Died on December 27th, 1836 in West Columbia, TX

6.3. His nickname of "Father of Texas" was earned when he promoted the American settlement in the Mexican territory of Texas.

6.4. He lived in Virginia and San Antonio

6.5. After Texas was annexed as part of the United States, Austin ran for President, but he didn't win.

6.6. He was put into prison for about a year for rooting for the annexation for Texas.
