1. Teaching about Nepalese Culture

1.1. OVERVIEW: I will be teaching a lesson on Nepali culture, due to the numbers of Nepalese immigrants in the school I teach.

1.1.1. WHAT- In order to learn more about Nepal, I will be teaching a unit on Nepalese culture, including their dance, music, religion, and art. In my 11th grade English literature class. Students will be broken into groups to do their research. Presentations will be made in class and students will be asked to bring one Nepalese food or snack to share with the class.

1.1.1.1. WHO- I will be responsible for overseeing and assisting with questions regarding the assignment. Students will do their research in groups. They will be able to seek assistance from library staff as necessary.

1.1.1.1.1. WHEN- During our South Asian literature unit in October. Students will have opportunity to work on their assignment during a couple of class periods and for homework.

2. Teaching about Iranian Culture

2.1. Overview: In order to open my students mind to the beautiful aspects of Iranian culture, contrary to popular media representations, I will be conducting a unit in my 10th grade English literature class on Persian poetry.

2.1.1. WHAT- In order to learn more about Persian culture, students will complete a unit on Persian Literature and Poetry. For one of their assignments in this unit, I will ask them to do research on three Persian writers or poets and collect 2 examples of their work. They will create a small ‘Poetry book,’ which inside they will introduce the writer or poet with a short biography of them, discuss the circumstances of the time period in which the author lived, including issues and influences of the time that may have contributed to their writing style, and then include at 2 examples of their work. Students will present their assignments to the class and share one of the pieces of writing they selected.

2.1.1.1. WHO- I will be responsible for overseeing and assisting with questions regarding the assignment. Students will do their research independently online or in the library.

2.1.1.1.1. WHEN- During our poetry unit in January. Students will have to do research for homework, but are free to ask questions in class. Presentations will be made in class one week after the assignment is given.
