5. Walnut Street Jail 1790-1835

5.2. The experience of prison in those days shows not the abscense of color awareness

6. Jim Crow

6.1. Racial class system, whites were superior whereas mexicans and african americans were inferior

6.2. Southern and border states

6.3. Lynchings were a form of discipline and publicly displayed.

6.4. Whites would often visit black communities and terrorize them as lessons to be learned

6.5. Police often aided in the lynchings

6.6. Blacks were not allowed to introduce themselves to whites. Black males were not allowed to interact in any way, shape, or form with a white female or would be considered to rape her.

7. Plessy vs Ferguson

7.1. Legitimized Jim Crow law

7.2. Homer Adolph Plessy was 1/8 African American and 7/8 White but was still classified and treated as an African American

7.3. Seperate Car Act violated the 13th and 14th Amendment

7.4. June 7, 1892

7.5. Plessy was found guilty in court and appealed to the Supreme Court.

7.6. 1896 Supreme Court again found him guilty in violation of the Seperate Car Act

8. Emancipation Procalmation

8.1. 1863

8.2. Reconstuction period from 1866-1877

8.3. Blacks and whites integrating together in a non slavery society

8.4. Schools were formed, giving the oppurtunity for literacy at any age

8.5. Protection of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment, blacks were able to vote, participate in political process, and acquire land.

8.6. Some whites were opposed to this progression and rallied due to their beliefs of blood, sweat, and tears on their establishment of authority and power.

9. 13th, 14th, 15th Amendment

9.1. Granted blacks the same legal protection as whites
