The Princess by Mind Map: The Princess

1. Psychoanalytic Perspective

1.1. Ego: The ego operates on the reality principle, satisfying the id’s desires in ways that will realistically bring pleasure rather than pain.

1.1.1. Throughout the film, we see Claire as she deals with the reality of detention. Within the first few minutes of detention, she says, "I can't believe you can't get me out of this.. I mean it's so absurd I have to be here on a Saturday! It's not like I'm a defective or anything..." Claire's actions shows that she doesn't want to be there and is upset that it has happened to her.

1.2. Foreclosure: When a person seems to know who he/she is but has latched on to an identity prematurely without much thought.

1.2.1. Claire says "I'm not saying that to be conceited! I hate it! I hate having to go along with everything my friends say!" She is showing that she goes with everything her friends say and can't think for herself

1.3. Denial: Refusal to recognize or acknowledge a threatening situation.

1.3.1. When Bender is claiming that Claire is spoiled and stuck up she screams "Shut up" and denies that everything that he said isn't true. Claire refuses to realize that she is a spoiled stuck up brat.

1.4. Permissive: Highly supportive but makes few rule and trust rather than monitors.

1.4.1. When Claire complains about how she doesn't want to go to Saturday detention her dad responds "I'll make it up to you...Honey, ditching class to go shopping doesn't make you a defective. Have a good day." Her dad is supportive by understanding that after ditching class this one act of misbehavior doesn't make her a bad person. He understands that she has to accept her punishment but will make it up to her.

1.5. Personal Fable: perceptions of one's own uniqueness (experiences, perspectives, feelings, values) and that one is destined for greatness.

1.5.1. Bender and Claire are talking about the clubs Claire participates in and Bender talks about how people in clubs are a...holes, and Claire says, "Well you wouldn't know. You don't even know any of us." This shows that Claire thinks that her and anyone else who is involved in a club are unique and different than people who aren't in any clubs.

2. 3 other concepts

2.1. Role Playing: A set of expectations about a social position, defining how those in position ought to behave.

2.1.1. All of them are talking about how they won't be friends on Monday and Claire says,"Oh, be honest Andy...if Brian came walking up to you in the hallway, what would you do? I mean, picture this, your'e there with all the sports. I know exactly what you'd do, you'd say hi to him and when he left you'd cut him all up so your friends wouldn't think you really liked him!

2.2. Conformity: Conformity is adjusting our behavior or thinking to coincide with a group standard.

2.2.1. At one scene in the movie, Bender wanted to smoke during detention. At first, Claire was very against it and did not want to ruin her image by smoking. As she watched the other kids start smoking, she did not want to be left out. She conforms to the group and decides to try it with everyone, so she is not embarrassed for not being a part of it.

2.3. Behavioral Social Perspective: How organisms learn new behaviors or modify existing ones, depending on whether events in their environments reward or punished these behaviors.

2.3.1. After getting caught from ditching school to go shopping, Claire now knows not to do that ever again. She knows not to do this because she is being punished for her actions by spending her Saturday in detention.
