4. Attack on Pearl Harbor

4.1. December 7, 1941

4.2. Japanese planes attacked American ships in Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii.

4.2.1. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was in charge of Japanese forces.

4.2.2. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the US president

4.2.2.1. Roosevelt claimed that it was "a date which will live in infamy" while requesting a declaration of war in an address to Congress the next day.

4.3. Within 2 hours, the Japanese had sunk or damaged 19 ships, including 8 battleships moored in Pearl Harbor.

4.3.1. Over 2,300 Americans were killed

4.3.2. More than 1,100 American were wounded

4.4. The attack on Pearl Harbor was significant because it directly brought the United States out of its policy of isolationism and directly into the action in World War II.
