Discovering Holden's by Mind Map: Discovering Holden's

1. Jay Gatsby

1.1. Very dismissive

1.1.1. “You don’t see what I mean at all….there wasn’t any sense trying to have an intelligent conversation. I was sorry as hell I’d started it…you give me a royal pain in the ass”

1.1.1.1. He doesn't give people a chance to explain themselves or prove they're not as bad as they seem. Because he sees people in a sense that they're all not worth his time he doesn't develop those connections he needs.

1.1.2. “That's the whole trouble. You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't.”

1.2. Lonley

1.2.1. “Couldn't think of anybody to call up. My brother D.B. was in Hollywood. My kid sister Phoebe … was out. Then I thought of giving Jane Gallagher's mother a buzz … Then I thought of calling this girl …Sally Hayes. … I thought of calling … Carl Luce. … So I ended up not calling anybody”

1.2.1.1. Jay and Daisy have a similar relationship to that of Holden and Jane. They're both the people that when they are feeling lonely, they want to talk to. And when that doesn't happen, no one else in their mind is good enough to talk to, so they remain lonely.

2. Charlie Kelmeckis

2.1. Depressed

2.1.1. “That's the whole trouble. You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't.”

2.1.1.1. This is similar to Holden in the sense that they both want to find peace and want to ind happiness but no matter how much they look or it, its not going to be found.

2.1.2. “ You don't like anything that's happening” -it made me even more depressed when she said that

2.1.2.1. This statement is said to Holden by his sister who really loves and cares about him, and Charlie and his sister have a very similar relationship

2.2. Craves attention and love

2.2.1. “I know you're supposed to feel pretty sexy when someone gets up and pulls their dress over their head, but i didnt. Sexy was about the last thing i was feeling. I felt much more depressed than sexy.”

2.2.1.1. Charlie looks at everything in his life surrounding him, and notices that so may aspects of it involve sex or a relationship. So he forces himself into getting into a relationship to try to experience love and some sort of connection, but realizes that it only makes him more upset and not happy at all. As does Holden.

2.2.2. “What the hell was the fight about anyway…” ”About you..Yeah i was defending your doddam honor. Stradlater said you had a lousy personality. i couldn't let him get away with that stuff.”

2.2.2.1. Even though they are not the best of friends, Holden defends Ackley because he really doesn't have any other real friends. He is lonely, very similar to Charlie and Patrick.

3. Holden Caulfield

3.1. Very secluded

3.1.1. “Anyway, it was the Saturday of the football game. … I remember around three o'clock that afternoon I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill. … You could see the whole field from there, and you could see the two teams bashing each other all over the place. … You could hear them all yelling”.

3.1.1.1. Football games are a very public place and a lot of people can find at least someone to talk to or somewhere to fit in but Holden chooses to completely distance himself from the entire school

3.2. Always searching for something

3.2.1. “Any way, i kept standing next to that crazy cannon, looking down at the game and freezing my ass off. Only i wasn't watching the game too much. what i was really hanging around for, i was trying to feel some kind of goodbye”

3.2.1.1. He is very curious to find the things he is missing in his life, like his relationships

3.2.2. “Oh God!” old luce said. “is this going to be a typical Caulfield conversation? i want to know now.”

3.2.2.1. Holden is missing out in learning the things with his friends that a normal teenager should learn because he doesn't have those friendships because he isolates himself from everyone so he always tries to get weird information from people

4. Steven Hyde

4.1. Secretly very compassionate

4.1.1. “The kid was swell. … He was making out like he was walking a very straight line, the way kids do, and the whole time he kept singing and humming. … It made me feel better. It made me feel not so depressed anymore.”

4.1.1.1. Hyde and Holden both give off this tough guy impression but they have a soft side to them that lets some of their weakness show sometimes

4.2. Negative outlook

4.2.1. “Goddam money. It always ends up making you blue as hell”

4.2.1.1. This quote is good for both of these guys because they can take anything and turn it into something depressing

4.2.2. “ You don't like anything that's happening” -it made me even more depressed when she said that

4.2.2.1. Hydes character is a very nonchalant, yet sad at the same time. He goes with the flow but wants to feel happy and wants to have people in his life, similar to Holden

5. JD Salinger's Holden is insecure, lonely, and craves attention but he is not alone. Jay Gatsby, Charlie Kelmeckis, and Steven Hyde, while very different, share similar inner monologues that allow many readers and viewers to relate and connect to them.
