2. obtain raw materials and secure markets in East Asia

2.1. Japan needed to add raw materials and secure markets in East Asia because they were trying become more westernized and wanted more markets and shops to be prominent in East Asia. They wanted to expand trade with the west and needed to up their game to do so.

3. need for strategic security

3.1. Strategic security was very vital in the war of Japan against China. The fact that China was 30 times the size of Japan made it important that every person and plan had to strategic and meaningful. For example taking over Manchuria was a huge economic gain for Japan because it gave Japan important things used for resources. Also this could add a buffer against the threat of Russia.

4. equality with Western powers

4.1. Japan wanted to be just like the West, they envied and longed for their strength. Their ability to dominate areas is what led Japans motive. A strong military, mimicking of clothing , building factories and industries were all ways Japan wanted to be like The West. Furthermore, somehow they had to gain the respect of the Western powers.

5. gaining support for militarianism and expansionism

5.1. After gaining new land, the idea that a strong military was essential was reinforced. Now that Japan has won a war, expanding the army will reflect them as untouchable. Expansionism was also important along with the military because if they wish to seize new land without competing for it, their military has to stand tall.

6. desire for equality with the West

6.1. Page 16: Japan established a limited form of democracy,and change began to show in all areas. Japan started modernizing the army (it adapted German military tactics), and established a new navy in order to become more powerful.
