1. Arts and Education

1.1. Shang/Zhou

1.1.1. The Shang/Zhou arts consisted of bronze technology. The education of their society was fairly advanced. They had a basic math knowledge and reading and writing of poems and books.

1.2. Sumerians

1.2.1. This statue is of one of the Sumerians leaders. The Sumerians used materials including shell, lapis, limestone and gold for their Art and architect. Their education was based off of their beliefs.

2. Science and Technology

2.1. Shang/Zhou

2.1.1. The Shang/Zhou perfected the calendar and recorded irregular astronomical events. They also developed warfare technology, engineering technology and glass production.

2.2. Sumerians

2.2.1. The Sumerians believed to be the first astronomers. They also created three main types of boat which were made out of, reeds and animal skin, wooden-oared ships, and bitumen waterproofing. The picture is of a plow that was created by hand.

3. Government and leaders

3.1. Shang/Zhou

3.1.1. The leaders of Shang/Zhou started with one king and was passed down within the family.

3.2. Sumerians

3.2.1. The Sumerians government consists of city-states which were controlled by the priests. They all gathered and worshiped as one in a special building called Ziggurat which was in the center of the city-states.

4. Social structure and Family life

4.1. Shang/Zhou

4.1.1. The highest up in rank was the king who led the government and gave land to the lords. Next is the lords and warriors who paid taxes to the king and provided him with protection. Lastly came the peasants who farmed the lords and nobles lands. The family life was very important. the oldest male of the home ran the house and all of the women and children obeyed him without any complaint. Ancestor worship was very important, and marriages were arranged.

4.2. Sumerians

4.2.1. Men highest up were the kings, religious leaders, military and civil officers. Next came the farmers, herders, artists, merchants, and crafts people. Lastly were the slaves who served for 7 years and then were freed. Sumerians had a male dominated home and worshiped their ancestors similar to the Shang/Zhou.

5. Religion

5.1. Shang/Zhou

5.1.1. The Shang/Zhou believe in an impersonal power or one god. This god wants good behavior and good government within the society. They also believed in a dragon figure that lived in the rivers, this is why the dragon was used most of their crafts work.

5.2. Sumerians

5.2.1. The Sumerians used to practice polytheistic. This pictures is of artifacts of praying Sumerians. They believe in multiple gods and goddesses, along with their own religions and rituals.

6. Geography and Agriculture

6.1. Shang/Zhou

6.1.1. Shang/Zhou

6.1.1.1. The Shang/Zhou people inhabited land around the yellow river which made for good water supplies. They built their territory off of the yellow river, which made their society grow faster and create a strong government.

6.2. Sumerians

6.2.1. The Sumerians were thought to be the first to have an abundance of crops grown by the community. The Tigris and Euphrates river flooded once a year leaving silt. To protect the crops the Sumerians built mud walls and dug ditches to collect water for the crops.

7. Economy and Trade

7.1. Sumerians

7.1.1. The Sumerians had many jobs varying from farmers to fishers, shepherds, weavers, leather-workers, sailors etc. They even had a seal to mark/label items with. The Sumerians did no have many natural recourses so they had to trade to get them. They transported the goods using a trading ship.

7.2. Shang/Zhou

7.2.1. They used ox-drawn plows and improved irrigation techniques. A messaging system was created with men riding back and fourth on horseback.
