Parnell Case by Mind Map: Parnell Case

1. Issues/ Problems with the Case & Connecting to Course Content

1.1. Ineffective teaching

1.1.1. -is Parnell being taught by ineffective teachers?

1.1.2. -is the community in which he is learning safe for learners or was it when he was not in Canada?

1.2. IEP

1.2.1. -is stress putting stress on Parnell? Is this effecting his learning?

1.3. Issues in Special Education

1.3.1. -school has no reading programs at the moment, not a viable option

1.3.2. -how does the school approach the option? do they approach it in a proper way that it should be?

1.4. Cognitive development/child development

1.4.1. -discouragement -parnell might feel discouraged because he's not at the same levels as his peers sp he might not feel as good as them, leading to low self confidence

1.5. Parnell should be at the concrete operational stage (7-11 year olds)

1.5.1. -he seems to be at the pre-operational stage of Piagets stage of development

1.5.2. -he doesn't know how to read, follow directions, can't stay focussed and can't stay on task

1.5.3. -his thought process is still developing

1.5.4. -during this stage the child's vocabulary is being expanded and developing, however Parnell can't read yet so his vocabulary is limited

1.5.5. -he may not be listening to instructions because pre-operational children can only look at things from their own point of view (Parnell has difficulty listening to others)

1.6. Zone of Proximal Development

1.6.1. -what a student can do on their own vs what they can do with assistance

1.6.2. -he excels from one on one attention but he's not getting that

1.6.3. -he's good at phonics and letter recognition -he excels with one on one help therefore his reading has potential to improve with one on one help (but he has no one there)

1.6.4. -if someone was in the class all the time that might be more beneficial

1.7. Differentiated Learning

1.7.1. -is each persons learning style being implemented into the classroom?

1.7.2. -are they focussing on student success rather than getting through each lesson?

1.7.3. -are they focussed on progress rather than the end result?

1.7.4. -are they accommodating to his needs?

1.7.5. -need to devote extra time to Parnell's needs

2. Parnell is 3 grades below his peers in achievement in school

2.1. -this is a big problem because he will not be able to learn with his peers (will most likely become frustrated and not understand what they are learning

3. he doesn't understand the basics, so anything else to him is unachievable without knowing the basics

3.1. -he is likely to become uninvolved and uninterested in learning because the material is too hard for him

3.2. -this could possibly be why he is off task the majority of the time and is easily confused

3.3. -obsessive media attention going on at the senior public school shares a campus with Parnell's school (over identification of media attention could cause him to be off task as well because he's being distracted

4. -he didn't go to school prior to moving to Canada

5. -Parnell can't read

5.1. -there's no special reading program/ it's not a valid option (was taken out because of budget issues)
