4. Reconstruction

4.1. After Lincoln's assassination, reconstruction turned from being unifying and forgiving as Lincoln wanted it, to being self defeating in its handling of the new order, creating discriminatory and unfair laws.

4.1.2. Made it difficult for Negros to own land.

4.1.3. Gave freedom but instituted new laws that would not let them enjoy freedom.

5.1. African Americans were relegated to the status of second class citizens
