Conch

1. The conch is used to control the kids and make sure they don't do anything wrong or get in trouble.

1.1. "I got the conch. I'm going to that Jack Merridew an' tell him, I am."

1.2. "I'm going to him with this conch in my hands. I'm going to hold it out."

1.3. Piggy held up the conch and the booing sagged a little, then came up again to strength.

1.4. The booing rose and died again as Piggy lifted the white, magic shell.

2. The conch is used to give Ralph more power over everyone.

2.2. "I'm chief. I was chosen."

2.3. "Meetings. Don't we love meetings? Every day. Twice a day. We talk." He got on one elbow. "I bet if I blew the conch this minute, they'd come running. Then we'ed be, you know, very solemn, and someone would say we ought to build a jet, or a submarine, or a TV set. When the meeting was over they'd work for five minutes, then wander off or go hunting."

2.4. "I say! You voted for me for chief. Didn't you hear the conch? You played a dirty trick---we'd have given you fire if you'd asked for it---"

3. The conch is used to call assemblies and keep people in order.

3.1. "Blow the conch." said Piggy. "Blow as loud as you can."

3.2. "Because the rules are the only thing we've got!"

3.3. "Piggy's got the conch."
