1. Homeostasis- Tendency of all organisms to correct imbalances and deviations from their normal state
2. Intrinsic motivation- Engaging in activities because they are personally rewarding or because they fulfill our beliefs and expectations
3. Fundamental needs- biological drives that must be satisfied to maintain life
4. James - Lange Theory - Believed that emotions are perception of certain internal bodily change
5. Instincts - Innate tendencies that determine behavior
6. Incentive- External stimulus reinforcer, or reward that motivates behavior
7. Lateral Hypothalamus- The part of the hypothalamulus that produces hunger signals
8. Psychological Needs- The urge to belong and to give and receive love, and the urge to acquire esteem
9. Emotion- a set of complex reactions to stimuli involving subjective feelings, physiological arousal, and observable behavior
10. Cannon - Bard Theory- certain experiences activate the thalamus, which sends messages to the cortex and to other body organs
11. Drive - a state of tension produced by a need that motivates an organism toward a goal
12. Ventromedial Hypothalamus- the part of the hypothalamus that can cause one to stop eating
13. Motivation- Internal state that activate behavior and directs it toward a goal
14. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs- human beings need to feel competent, to win approval and recognition and to sense that they have achieved something
15. Self Actualization - The pursuit of knowledge and beauty or whatever else is required for the realization of ones unique potential
