1. Prior Knowledge: Students already have an understanding of the current state of race in our country and student's are aware of some of the more famous people who fought for equality for African-Americans; therefore they understand that at some point former slaves had a very hard time in life. Also, students have just finished their unit on the Civil War.

2. Misconceptions: Students often assume that because President Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation that everything from then on forward was better for African-Americans. Students believe that the South came out of the Civil War fine aside from losing slavery. Students believe that the North was likened to the "Promise Land" for African-Americans.

3. Key Concepts: Students will analyze the political, social, and economic effects of living in the South Post-Civil War. Terms (Freedmens Bureau, Black Codes, Sharecropping and Tenant Farming, 13th 14th 15th Amendments, Presidential plan for Reconstruction, and Congressional plan for Reconstruction.

4. Context & Importance: A thorough investigation and understanding of the Reconstruction period in American history is vital for students to connect with the upcoming era of oppression for African-Americans and the prejudice attitudes towards African-Americans, particularly in the Southern states.
