Defending North America by Mind Map: Defending North America

1. The Scrapping of the Avro Arrow

1.1. For the scrapping

1.1.1. Saved the government money, the plane was very expensive to produce and there were few orders. It cost six times more to produce than its American counterpart.

1.1.2. The plane would not have been very useful because Canada was never invaded or attacked.

1.1.3. Pilot driven interceptors were becoming obsolete as missiles were getting more advanced.

1.1.4. The company that made the planes, A.V.Row Canada, was unorganized. This could have created many problems in the production and distribution; they were a liability.

1.2. Against the scrapping

1.2.1. Canada lost the opportunity to lead the world in technology. The Arrow was the most advanced fighter plane in the world at that time. Putting it in the skies would have shown that Canada is a world leader in the area, and could attract opportunities.

1.2.2. Thousands of workers were fired after the operation was cancelled.

1.2.3. Canada lost many skilled engineers and scientists who went to the United States instead. Once they saw the government cut funding, they decided they would find better work and money South of the border.

1.2.4. It made Canada more dependent on USA exports because instead of using our own planes, Canada used American produced ones.

2. Canada's Acceptance of Nuclear Weapons in 1963

2.1. For

2.1.1. Nuclear weapons would further protect the Canadian borders.

2.1.2. Other countries would respect Canada's power more just because of the nuclear threat.

2.1.3. Having nuclear weapons would help Canada fulfill its role of being in NATO and NORAD. These weapons would be a part of defending North America.

2.1.4. Nuclear weapons can be a good negotiating tool because no countries wanted to risk a nuclear war.

2.2. Against

2.2.1. It promotes nuclear weapons by showing other countries that Canada thinks it is a good idea. This can lead to nuclear war.

2.2.2. They can cause extreme destruction if ever detonated.

2.2.3. Canada encouraged countries to disarm nuclear weapons, and it would go against that by having our own.

2.2.4. By Canada having nuclear weapons the Soviet would see the nation as a threat. That could make Canada a possible target just because of their threat.

3. Canada's Role in the Cuban Missile Crisis

3.1. For how Canada acted

3.1.1. Canada showed its independence from USA by not doing exactly what they wanted.

3.1.2. Canada put trust in the United Nations to decide, which promoted the UN and showed peaceful efforts being made.

3.1.3. The way the issue was dealt with did not result in a nuclear war.

3.1.4. Canada made decisions for the interests of its own people and their protection.

3.2. Against how Canada acted

3.2.1. It hurt Canada's relationship with USA by not immediately obeying their orders.

3.2.2. Canada did not act immediately in favor of its ally.

3.2.3. It made USA vulnerable to attack because Canada did not give immediate support, or help in anyway. Canada did not even let American planes carrying atomic bombs to land.

3.2.4. Canada said they did not trust the American's evidence and showed no trust in USA.
