7th Grade ELA:Standard: R.L.7.1: Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. by Mind Map: 7th Grade ELA:Standard: R.L.7.1: Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

1. BIg Ideas:

1.1. 1. Comprehend the grade level texts

1.2. Destinations

1.3. 2.Understand what an inference is and how to make an inference

1.4. 3.Use evidence based terms to cite textual evidence

1.5. 4.Write a paragraph to support analysis

1.6. 5.Analyze character development and characterization throughout a story

2. Student Objectives:

2.1. 1. I can describe the plot and characters in The Outsiders to show my comprehension of the novel by taking Exit Ticket Quizzes. (Bloom’s: Remembering)

2.1.1. Pause & Ask Questions: Throughout reading the novel, it is important for the teacher to know that students are actually reading and further, comprehending what they are reading. Giving them exit ticket quizzes is a great way to identify a comprehension or reading problem before it is the end of the novel and the student is too far behind.

2.2. 2. I can develop my understanding of inferences and create inferences while watching a short animated Pixar clip. (Bloom's: Creating & Understanding)

2.2.1. Practice/Realia: Students will watch a short pixar clip for bell work, and be asked to make inferences throughout the video. This is an interactive way to get students understanding how to make inferences. It also may seem fun to some students who enjoy short pixar clips.

2.3. 3. I can examine different evidence based terms and determine how to use these terms to lead into a quote

2.3.1. Tapping into Prior Knowledge: Students will talk about how they “lead into a quote” in their writing, What are the most common terms that they use and then they will hear what the most common terms their partner uses.

2.3.2. Pre-Teach Vocabulary: Students will be given a card with a list of evidence based phrases they can use when citing textual evidence.

2.4. 4. I can construct a Jane Schaffer paragraph. (Creating)

2.4.1. Guided Notes/Modeling: Along with this powerpoint, there is a Cornell Guided Notes handout for students to take notes on during the lesson/presentation. The powerpoint has examples of a Jane Schaffer Paragraph.

2.4.2. Graphic Organizers: Students are given a Graphic Organizer shaped like a hamburger that has each sentence separated into a different part of their burger. The full hamburger is one full paragraph.

2.4.3. Visual Organizers: When writing their first paragraph, students color code their sentences, with colors that represent, an introduction, concrete detail, commentary, and a conclusion.

2.5. 5. I can defend my analysis of the character Ponyboy by providing sufficient and relevant evidence from the novel. (Evaluating)

2.5.1. Break-down the Question: The teacher will walk through how to break-down what a analytical question is asking by using a doc-cam. This is a great way to model for student how to approach a difficult question and be sure that they are answering all parts of the question

2.5.2. Character Chart: Throughout the novel, student will use a character chart to jot down information about the main character Ponyboy
