Cells by Mind Map: Cells

1. Who first discovered the cell?

1.1. Robert Hooke first discovered the cell in 1665 by looking at a slice of dead cork through a microscope.

2. What structures make up a cell?

2.1. The basic structures include: the cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, golgi complex, mitochondrion, chloroplasts, vesicles, vacuole, lysosomes, peroxisomes, centrioles, cilia or flagella, and cytoskeleton (although this varies which each cell type).

3. What is the difference between a plant and animal cell?

3.1. Plant cells contain a cell wall, chloroplasts, one central vacuole, and plastids where as an animal cell does not. On the other hand, animal cells contain centrioles, lysosomes, and cilia in which plant cells do not.

4. What do cells make up or form?

4.1. Cells directly form tissues, which essentially form organisms. (Cells make up tissues. Tissues make up organs. Organs make up systems. Systems make up organisms.)

5. What are the two main types of cells?

5.1. 1) Eukaryotic: cells that contain membrane-bound organelles (such as a nucleus)

5.2. 2) Prokaryotic: cells that do not contain membrane -bound organelles

6. What is the cell theory?

6.1. 1. All living things are made up of cells.

6.2. 2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things.

6.3. 3. Living cells come only from other living cells.
