The Beginnings of the Internet

1. 1962: ARPA creates Information Processing Technologies Office. This computer department was in charge of finding a way to share info between two computers.
2. 1966: IPTO starts to make a computer network that is able to transmit info over telephone lines using packet switching.
3. Early 1980s: Researchers at BBN design a way to connect networks between themselves.
4. 1980s: The internet is created.
5. 1991: Gopher is created. It organized information on the internet according to related topics.
6. 1992: Brewster Kahle invents the Wide Area Information Servers.
7. 1990: Tim Berners-lee invents the World Wide Web
8. 1992: The World Wide Web has around 50 sites already. These were made by mostly universities.
9. 1992: Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina invent a way to access the World Wide Web easier.
10. 1995: Microsoft invents its own web browser called Internet Explorer.
11. 2002: Over 36 million sites have been created.
12. 1994: Andreessen and Jim Clark invent Mosaic Communications. They create a web browser Mosaic Netscape.
13. 1995: After Microsoft invented their browser, Microsoft and Netscape were constantly competing for the best browser
14. 1957: Soviets launch first satellite.
15. 1969: Leonard Kleinrock installs the first computer processor that can handle digital packet-switched data.
