1. Socialisation

1.1. This is how we learn our NORMS and VALUES in society. A norm is something that we consider normal, to wear clothes/go to school. A value is something we consider important, listening to our parents/obey the law.

2. Primary Socialisation

2.1. This is the socialisation which happens to us as young children and the agency of primary socialisation is our parents. They teach us norms such as 'Girls should play with dolls'

3. Secondary Socialisation

3.1. This is the socialisation which happens through our entire lives and there are many agencies of secondary socialisation, including School, work, religion, peers and the media.

4. Socialisation and Gender

4.1. Our gender is how masculine or feminine we feel we are- it is not the same as sex!!! We are socialised into our gender through primary and secondary socialisation. Eg- a parent buys a girl a doll and a boy a car.

5. Socialisation and Ethnicity

5.1. An ethnic group is a group which shares a culture. Our ethnicity is the ethnic group we feel we belong to.We are socialised into ethnicity through primary and secondary socialisation. Eg- School teaches British values through an ethnocentric curriculum.

6. Social change

6.1. The way in which the norms and values have changed over time. Eg- it used to be a norm for women not to work and for the nuclear family. Women now work.

7. Formal Social Control

7.1. This is where we encourage people to follow the law and the sanctions are formal punishments, like prison or fines.

8. Informal Social Control

8.1. This is where we encourage people to follow the norms and values of society, through sanctions like detention(negative) and a promotion (positive).
