1. Try to sum up what the author is saying in your own words

1.1. Once you understand something, convey the relevant line of thought by imagining you are presenting it to someone quite unfamiliar with it; use examples.

1.1.1. You may wish to take issue with the argument; provide an adequate defence of your counter-argument. NB There are not may knock-down arguments in philosophy

1.1.2. Pay careful attention to the structure of the essay; signpost for the reader

1.2. Introduction - introduce topic, sort out relevant ambiguities if there are any, indicate the ensuing argument. It may be helpful to write in numbered sections.

1.2.1. Conclusion - Provide a summary of what has been achieved by the argument

1.2.2. A well structured essay must be planned in advance

1.3. Originality - Use your own examples, explain arguments in your own words, provide original assessments of arguments (this can be hard at first) NB Read about what other philosophers have said and the responses to those responses. This will allow you to develop and justify your own responses and push arguments as deep as they will go. Consider also how other philosophers respond to arguments.
