1. Geography

1.1. The climate of the North was very cool with four different seasons.

1.2. There were thick wooded areas with very rocky soil. This caused for short growing seasons and lots of fishing for food.

2.1. More than 90% of all goods in America were manufactured in the North.

2.2. Overall, they produced more firearms, iron, boots/shoes, and textiles than anywhere else.

3. Culture

3.1. Northerners thought that everyone should be treated equally. However, they didn't necessarily want to abolish slavery altogether.

3.2. Many Northerners worked in factories because there was so many of them.

4. Population

4.1. During the Civil War, the Union had a population of 22 million people.

5. Major Cities

5.1. New York City was the largest city in the North during 1860-1861. It had a population of about 800,000 people.

5.2. Philadelphia was also a large city during the time. It had a population of about 560,000 people.

6.1. The North had 20,000 miles of railroad. This made it easier to move their army different places. It played a major role in moving troops and supplies.
