Many different types of organisms living & interacting with each other

Food Chain

What do food chains show you? Food chains show the sequence in which energy is transferred from one organism to the next as one eats the other.


The sun will transfer 100% its energy to the producer.


The grass is the PRODUCER in this food chain.



The rabbit is the PRIMARY CONSUMER in this food chain because it is gaining energy from the producer, grass.

Primary Consumer


The fox is the SECONDARY CONSUMER in this food chain because it is gaining energy from the rabbit which is transfered energy from the producer.

Secondary Consumer


The hawk is the TERTIARY CONSUMER in this food chain because its at the very top and gains small ammounts of energy from everything below it in the food chain (Fox, Rabbit, Grass)

Tertiary Consumer

Food Web

A food web is just a much more complex version of a food chain. Unlike a food chain, the food web shows multiple organisms gaining energy from one organism.

Abiotic Factors- Abiotic means that it is something that was never living and will ever be living in its entire existance. Biotic Factors- Biotic means that it is something that was living or is living or will be living in its future.

Primary Succession

Secondary Succession

Black Plague

The Black Plague happened around the time of 1400 AD. The result of this was many losses of life in Europe because of the spreading disease. This was our only major dip in population growth on our timeline.

Population Growth

Population growth is a growth in population over time. Our human population has been steadily increasing since the start of mankind. The only flaw happened in the 1400's when the Black Plague began to spread in parts of Europe creating a widespread disease across that continent. The next huge increase happened in the 1800's at the birth of the Industrial Revolution and has been increasing its upward slope in population ever since.

Exponential Growth

Exponential growth is when a population starts at say 2, and starts to double its its population rate increasingly. Ex. 2,4,8,16,32,ect..


Sustainability means the amount something can hold with out it collapsing.

Industrial Revolution

in the 1800's the Industrial Revolution caused a huge increase in population because the goods that were produced became better, and modern medicine was introduced to help people live longer and be more healthy.

J-Curve & S-Curve

J-Curve: A J-Curve is a graph that starts out relatively low and works its way up and continually increases breaking its carrying capacity, forming a 'Letter J" shape. S-Curve: A S-Curve is a graph that starts out low once again and increases fast, but after a period of time, it will start slowing down, and level out, making an "Letter S" Shape.

Logistic Growth

Logistic Growth is essentially what happens on an S-Curve graph. the line increasingly grows and then comes to a slow and flattens out.

Hot Spots

An ecological hot spot is a area with a great amount of biodiversity that is being threatened by humans.

Water Pollution

Water Pollution is when water becomes polluted by either natural or man made things. Some examples are debris falling from a construction site, soil or sediment runoff going into a river or even just pet waste getting into the river will pollute it.

Point Source Pollution

Point Source Pollution: Point source pollution is a pollutant that comes from one single source that is visible by the human eye such as a factory emitting its exhaust into the air.

Non-Point Source Pollution

Non-Point Source Pollution: Non-Point Source Pollution does not just come from one specific and distinct thing, its a combination of say, a town's residents going on about their every day activities doing things such as driving their cars to work or fertilizing their lawns.


An Aquifer is an flowing stream of water underground that flows between rocks that can be brought up from wells as purified water.
