1.2. 1517 Protests

1.2.1. Martin Luther

1.2.1.1. Triggered a full scale revolt against church abuse

1.2.1.2. German monk & professor of theology

1.2.1.3. Wanted to follow/believe the church as a young man

1.2.1.3.1. However, he couldn't take his focus on the corruption of the church

1.2.1.3.2. Thought that man should follow words of the bible, not the pope or church

1.2.1.4. Luther's Teachings

1.2.1.4.1. Salvation only achieved through faith

1.2.1.4.2. Only God can erase sin

1.2.1.4.3. Wanted elected officials, not the pope

1.2.1.4.4. The Bible is the only source of truth

1.2.1.4.5. People can interpret The Bible for themselves.

1.2.1.5. Wrote 95 Thesis

1.2.1.5.1. A form of protest against the sale of indulgences

2. The English Reformation

2.1. King Henry VIII decides he wants to break up with his current wife

2.1.1. She wasn't able to have a baby boy (to claim his heir to the throne)

2.1.2. Wants new wife to be Anne Boleyn

2.1.3. Divorce not a simple process

2.1.3.1. Roman catholic church believed in marriage for life

2.1.4. He could do it, but he possibly wouldn't get into heaven because of it

2.1.4.1. Or he could ask the pope for "papal dispensation"

2.1.4.2. Denied of this in 1533, forced Archbishop of Canterbury to grant him divorce

2.1.4.2.1. All of this controversy lead people to revolt against church. The church lost it's credibility
