1. Content question: Why is self-correction important for children while they are reading?

1.1. Self-correction is when a child corrects the word they previously said with the correct word.

1.2. Good readers self-correct while they are reading.

1.3. Early readers will begin to self-correct when they notice a word they say does not look quite right.

1.4. Self-correction leads to an increase in sight word recognition.

2. Teaching and Learning Question: How do you help a child who is struggling with fluency?

2.1. Fluency means reading with automatic word recognition. In more practical terms, fluent reading takes place when most or all words in a text are in the reader's sight vocabulary.

2.2. As teachers, we must guide the students to reread the sentence whenever they struggle to identify a word in order to build fluency.

2.3. Readers must take an active interest in reading to undertake a volume of reading that will build a significant sight vocabulary of reading fluency.

2.4. The more fluent a reader is, the better reading comprehension they have.

3. Diversity Question: How do you help an English Language Learner feel comfortable as well as learn without disrespecting their culture and knowledge?

3.1. Teachers should practice the pronunciation of the student's name because names represent the student. Saying an English Language Learner's name correctly gives them a sense of purpose.

3.2. Celebrate their culture in the classroom. Asking the student to bring in food or something else that is traditional to their culture can serve as a fun activity for the other children as well as a history lesson.

3.3. Showing the child vocabulary as well as providing books that contain vocabulary the other children use on a daily basis that might not be present in their culture will help them add sight words to their vocabulary.
