John Paul Sartre’s play No Exit illuminated some of the existential conundrums that were further discussed by Michel Foucault, R.D. Laing and others. The conundrum being that our personal identity and the way we see ourselves is enmeshed in the way that others see us. Humans resent this and chaff at the restrictiveness of it but at the same time recognize the payoff for ourselves. The main pay off is that participation in the game of life is one of the most basic human motivations and we must be full and active participants to play. The balance between the torment of “others” and the desire to “play the game” is one of the main occupations and this perspective provides further illumination for the concept of KYD.
