Teaching the Solar System by Mind Map: Teaching the Solar System

1. Who are the important names the class will need to remember?

1.1. a brief look into the great astronomers, and philosofers that give us the view we have today of the solar system.

1.1.1. There are many texts and articles that show the evolution of these sciences.

1.1.2. Textbooks and tv programs like "The Cosmos"

1.2. A brief over view of the major space missions and their objectives.

1.2.1. The Nasa website has a timeline showing the major missions

2. Where will this lesson lead the class?

2.1. A greater understanding of the physics principals that govern the solar system

2.1.1. This section is handled by textbooks

2.1.2. Papers, and articles by popular science figures like; Stephen Hawking, Niel DeGrase Tyson, and Carl Sagan

2.2. The first step towards the more complex physics lessons can be learned by using the solar system model.

3. What kind of lab activity can be done in class?

3.1. Using students to represent planets and yarn to show orbits. we can discuss the effects of gravity.

3.1.1. This activity was shown in google classrom

3.2. the classic diagram using styrafoam balls to show the different sizes and make ups of the planets. We can discuss how the different planets change the forces of gravity.

3.2.1. This project was taken out of a high school textbook.

4. What will the class learn from this lesson?

4.1. the order of planets, why orbits are egg shaped, and why the sizes of planets vary so greatly.

4.1.1. Objectives for the lesson plan were found on the department of Education website.

4.2. the effects of gravity, and the causes of new forces in the solar system.

4.2.1. The state SOL outline provides guidance for requirements for classes

5. Why does the class need to know this?

5.1. This lesson serves as an introduction to astronomy/cosmology, and physics.

5.1.1. State Depatrment of Education guidelines

5.2. this lesson encompasses basic principals for multiple science classes. Serves as a solid foundation for future leassons.

5.2.1. Out lines for the Collage Prep tests discuss the material that should be covered.
