Technology of World War II by Mind Map: Technology of World War II

1. Computer Technology

1.1. Enigma

1.1.1. This machine translated "a plain text message into a sophisticated code".

1.1.1.1. This machine was for creating a code

1.2. Collosus

1.2.1. Codebreakers in Britain used this machine in order to break codes sent by German (Axis) powers.

1.2.1.1. This machine was for breaking codes sent my the enemy and translating those into a code in which the British and Allied Powers could translate and understand.

1.2.1.1.1. These two devices had a single purpose: To encrypt and decrypt messages.

1.3. ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer)

1.3.1. Created and developed in the U.S, this device is a "universal calculating machine" and can calculate many different formulas and equations.

1.3.1.1. Reason behind the ENIAC: "In order to accurately a fire a weapon from a long distance, a number of variables need to be taken into account" Ex. Trajectory, wind speed, weather conditions,

1.3.1.1.1. Female calculators ran this machine as depicted in the newly-released movie "Hidden Figures".

2. Atomic Weaponry

2.1. Headquartered in Loa Alamos, the U.S. Atomic Energy Security Services, three atomic devices were created. Most notorious were"Little Boy" and "Fat Man" -dropped during WWII.

2.1.1. "Fat Man" was detonated on August 9, 1945 over Nagasaki, Japan

2.1.2. "Little Boy" was the atomic bomb detonated over Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945.

2.2. It is estimated that about 250,000 people were killed by the two U.S. nuclear detonations over Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

2.2.1. Despite creating a fake town and testing nuclear bombs (Trinity) on this fake town, even after viewing that complete destruction, the U.S. still dropped these two atomic bombs over towns with many innocent people.

2.3. Oppenheimer, when the test atomic bomb Trinity was detonated over their fake testing facility "turned to one of his colleagues and said...

2.3.1. "We have become death, the destroyer of worlds".

2.3.2. "He became a very outspoken critic of our continued nuclear weapons program".

2.3.2.1. During the McCarthy era, his security clearance was stripped away because of his strong involvement with this program.

3. Rocketry/Canons

3.1. V1 Rocket: "First of the "vengeance wespons" -This rocket was a German piece of weaponry and was a guided missile.

3.2. V2 Rocket: This weapon was autonomous in nature and used by German forces against Allied cities throughout Europe. 172 rockets fired, but they weren't used until 1944 (towards the end of WWII).

3.2.1. Both the V1 and V2 rockets, at the end of WWII were brought to the U.S. and served as a basis for the U.S. Space Program.

4. Radar

4.1. During WWII, radar was greatly used.

4.2. Radar used radio waves to "determine location and the motion of moving and fixed objects at a distance."

4.2.1. Foundation of modern/consumer electronics is found in early navigation tools during WWII's demand for goods and products battle-tested and to be used on the war front.

5. Medical Advances

5.1. Advanced in medicine and medical service delivery was not only important to soldiers on the battlefield, but these advances greatly helped the home front during the war and afterwards by implementing this new technology for the marketplace.

5.1.1. Penicillin

5.1.1.1. This product, though already invented prior to WW2, was not largely available in mass quantities for the public prior to D-Day.

5.1.1.2. STD's and horrific injuries suffered by soldiers led to this mass production for the public.

5.1.2. DDT and Anti-Malaria medical advances.

5.1.2.1. DDT at the time was seen as "an incredible gift"

5.1.3. Blood transfusions

5.1.3.1. Perfected during World War 2 as a result of healing wounds and caring for soldiers.

5.1.3.2. This technology was perfected and then brought back to the U.S. during and after the war to care for patients in hospitals and clinics in the U.S.
