1. Rocketry

1.1. Originally developed by Germany, and was used against cities in Europe.

1.2. They created the V1 and V2 rockets.

1.3. First launch was done in the summer of 1944 and over the next few months they were directed at London.

2. Computers

2.1. Enigma and Collosus were Cryptographic machines used to encode and decode enemy messages.

2.2. ENIAC (Electric Numerical Integrator and Computer) was a universal calculating machine.

2.3. this type of computer was needed to make firing tables because they could calculate the many variables.

2.4. used vacuum tube technology and was used on the atomic bomb project.

3. Atomic Weapons

3.1. Orbital image of an atom was established in 1911.

3.2. Leo Szilard realizes the potential dangers of chain reactions.

3.3. Splitting of the atom in 1938

3.4. 1941, Office of Scientific Research and Development was esablished.

3.5. Little boy- Uranium device that was detonated over Hiroshima, Japan.

3.6. Fat Man- Plutonium device detonated over Nagasaki, Japan.

4. Radar

4.1. was developed by Heinrich Hertz in the late 19th century.

4.2. other contributors would be Guglielmo Marconi and Christian Hulsmeyer.

4.3. First used to detect objects at sea so ships did not run into each other.

4.4. has tentacles in current technology.

5. Medical Advances

5.1. Penicillin

5.1.1. Became available in mass quantities after WWII and was used to treat wounded soldiers and the plethora of diseases they returned with.

5.2. DDT/ Anti Malaria

5.2.1. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) was used to treat malaria and typhus in the second half of WWII

5.3. Blood Transfusions

5.3.1. Introduced as a treatment for shock in critically wounded soldiers.
