1.1. Compares a student's performance against a national or other "norm" group, such as grade level, age, etc. It is always a percentile ranked assessment.

2.1. Measures a student's performance against a goal, specific objective, or standard.

3. Interim/Benchmark
3.1. Evaluates student performance at periodic intervals, frequently at the end of a grading period. Can predict student performance on end-of-year summative tests.

3.1.1.1. Ex. Quarterly, computer-administered testing
3.1.1.2. Similar to summative assessment, interim or benchmark assessments are usually administered according to scheduled intervals
4. Diagnostic
4.1. Assess a student's strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills prior to instruction.
4.1.1. Types of Diagnostic Assessment
4.1.1.1. Entrance Tickets- have students list what they already know about the subject
4.1.1.2. Have a discussion about what students know before lessons
4.1.1.3. Small quizzes about the subject that is going to be taught
5. Formative
5.1. Assess a student's performance during instruction, and usually occurs regularly throughout the instruction process.
