Can nonfiction be great literature?
People don't read enough nonfiction. What's so great about it?
Nonfiction Unit Questions, How do craft and structure demonstrate the authors point of view on a subject?, How do I identify myself as a reader of nonfiction?, How do I grow as a non-fiction reader?, How can I recognize"author moves" in nonfiction?
Not a lot of people read nonfiction (8 kids are avid non-fiction readers, 18 indifferent, 3 uninspired)
Kids can't decide what to read.
What do we want them to do?
Persuasion to read non-fiction vs. fiction, Inform you about things, Great for SCHOOL -- it will help you know more, Studying single topics: biology, Point of View is important: When you learn about a topic you get multiple points of view on a subject -- you get more than one side of the story.
Show kids different genres of nonfiction -- i.e. Biographies -- and what makes them great.
Define Nonfiction Elements, Facts in a story, Reasons and Evidence, Multiple points of view, First hand or Secondhand accounts, Cause/effect, problem/solution, Imagery, Details, Precise Vocabulary
Interviews with kids about their nonfiction experiences? What they loved (author style, language, evidence, topics. (All Freewrite on different themes)
Small group write a script for the big opening statement -- what's this about?
Small group write about the ending: what's the action we want them to take? Where should they start?

Commercials persuade to buy something; PSA persuades you to do something a) to help people, b) to do stuff to be safe; to help animals; to help people who can't help themselves with videos. "Other people have to be their voice"

Like a commercial but instead of selling something, it's sharing helpful ideas, knowledge or information with the public.
screenwriter, develops the story on paper, thinking about visual elements of the story while writing
researcher, gathers facts, quotes, still images, or other artifacts from the Internet
director, guides the entire process artistically
producer, makes sure people in the group are getting their jobs done
cinematographer, takes photos & video based on storyboard drawings and directions
actors, people on camera who act out the script
narrators, record voice over narration with the editors
script supervisor, makes sure the all story elements in the script are represented when storyboarding and filming
editor, assembles the video in iMovie and works with the director on sequence and timing
sound recorders, make sure the set is quiet, and that all that needs to be heard is recorded
still photographer, document the process in class, take photos that will show people how a PSA is made
