1. Content Question: What is fluency and how is it related to the reading process?

1.1. Fluency is the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.

1.1.1. During a guided reading lesson, Roy used finger pointing to track as he reads. He moves his finger continuously across the text rather than pointing word for word indicating that he is moving towards reading at a good rate which is a step towards fluency.

1.1.2. While answering questions during whole group instruction, Roy answers the questions at a proper speed, and displays expression in his voice.

1.1.3. During centers, Roy chooses to work with Reid at "read to someone". He chooses a book on animals and reads with excellent accuracy, while using finger pointing to track the words.

2. Teaching and Learning Question: How can we enhance a child's expression while reading when they are reading at an appropriate rate and accuracy?

2.1. During whole group instruction, Roy answers questions with a loud, strong, and powerful voice enunciating words properly. This might be a moment to bring up when conducting a read aloud with Roy to encourage him to use expression while he reads orally.

2.2. During a guided reading lesson, when called on to read to the teacher, Roy reads with little expression in his voice, and at a almost a whisper. This would be an opportunity to encourage Roy to look at the punctuation at the end of each sentence in order to determine how to read the sentence.
