Used to vs. Would

1. He wore the same blue shirt to work for 10 years.

2. Used to

2.1. actions or states in the past which are finished/no longer true now

2.2. I used to live in Manchester, but I moved to London last year.

2.3. I didn't use to like tomato when I was a child.

2.4. Did you use to play basketball as a child?

3. We don't use would or used to when we say how long a habit in the past continued, we use the past simple

4. Would

4.1. actions in the past which are finished/no longer true now

4.2. these actions were repeated again and again and again...

4.3. so would is only used for actions that were repeated many times and it cannot be used for states

4.4. When he was at university, he would sleep until noon at the weekends.

4.5. If we stress the word would it means that we find the habit annoying

4.6. As a teenager he would never do homework on Friday.

4.7. Would you practise every morning before school when you were a student?
