1. Stem cells are the foundation cells for every organ and tissue in our bodies. They have two key properties:

1.1. SELF-RENEW

1.1.1. Dividing in a way that makes copies of themselves.

1.2. DIFFERENTIATE

1.2.1. Giving rise to the mature types of cells, that make up our organs and tissues.

2. TISSUE STEM CELLS (Multipotent)

2.1. Tissue stem cells are already somewhat specialized and can produce some or all of the mature cell types found within the particular tissue or organs in which they reside.

2.2. ADVANTAGES

2.2.1. They are capable of limited self-renwal.

2.3. DISADVANTAGES

2.3.1. Small numbers found in tissue, difficult to locate. Usually only generates the cell types of the tissue in they are found.

3. EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS (Pluripotent)

3.1. Embryonic stem cells can generate all the different types of cells in the body.

3.2. They can be obtained from the blastocyst.

3.3. They are divided into:

3.3.1. ESC

3.3.1.1. Derived from human blastocyst.

3.3.2. iPS

3.3.2.1. Derived from reprogammated somatic cells.

3.3.3. SCNT

3.3.3.1. Derived from cloned blastocyst.

3.4. ADVANTAGES

3.4.1. They be in large quantities in the laboratory. Can be manipulated to grow into different cells types in the laboratory.

3.5. DISADVANTAGES

3.5.1. They carry a risk of cancer if not treated properly before transferred to a patient.

3.5.2. They are not patient specific treatments using them may trigger rejection by the patient's immune system.

4. TOTIPOTENT STEM CELLS

4.1. Totipoten stem cells are the fertilized egg and cells that immediately arise in the first few divisions.

4.2. They can generate viable embryo and within a matter of days these cells transition to become pluripotent.
