Assessments by Mind Map: Assessments

1. Summative Assessment

1.1. Summative Assessment is checking for student comprehension after the completion of collective instruction these can be done at the end of a semester or the end of the year or the end of a project. Examples are mid-term exam, final exam, or State exams.

2. Diagnostic Assessment is a way to pre-assess a students' strengths and weaknesses. This is primarily used in testing students for special needs services. Examples include testing students for language and reading as well as math and computation. This assessment determines what assistance a student needs or if they show no strengths and therefore they receive no services from SPED.

2.1. Diagnostic Assessment

2.1.1. A student who was referred for diagnostic testing was found to be an unidentified ELL with no real comprehension of the language spoken at home. As a result of the findings the student was assessed in English. He was found to not have a learning disability but instead he had a lack of vocabulary and schema to perform at the highest level.

3. Performance Assessment when students are given a task and perform some or all aspects of the task. Examples are a project that they have to research or a paper that they have to write.

3.1. Performance Assessment

3.2. Upon identifying that certain students are struggling with their writing ability the teacher referred to teaching from mentor texts and having students copy from mentor texts in order to practice proper punctuation and the proper mechanics of writing. This is in a 5th grade class where there is no writing assessment by the state.

4. Student data collection drives teaching strategies for students who need more help. Teachers can reinforce certain TEKS in small group instruction by grouping students by TEK needs. Teachers can also use the Tiering process of RTI to get help for a student through push in or pull out assistance. (Because I am a SPED TC with a Medically Fragile placement I have not had access to the sort of data that is needed here. I have floated to other classes to continue to learn and I have seen RTI meetings and Dyslexia teaching as Well as sat in on ARD meetings)

5. Formative Assessment is a form of formal and informal assessment. It includes diagnostic testing as well. It is used during the learning process and ranges from formal to informal assessment. An example of this is checking thru pre-assessment, oral assessment, graphic organizers, and data collection of student work.

5.1. Formative Assessment

5.1.1. A new student to the class a few months into the year was quickly found to have a speech impediment however he had no previous records to refer to. The teacher assessed with some formative assessment for a short period of time and quickly determined more needed to be done. Prior school was contacted and pressured for documentation. Sadly it was found the student was tested as globally low.

6. Interim/Benchmark Assessments are performed during the learning process to assess the students progress as new information is added to the learning process. Examples of this are exit tickets, written or mapped data by the students, student work, and weekly quizzes.

6.1. Interim/Benchmark Assessments

7. H.O.T questions for students

7.1. Guided Questioning 1. What signal words can you use to determine the author's organization? Why do you think the author did this? How can you use this type of knowledge in a real world scenario?

7.1.1. Closing Questions 2. What narrative perspective is this story written from? Can you rewrite the story from another narrative perspective and reflect to your audience another view of the circumstances?

7.1.1.1. Opening Questions 3. If you were to lay tiles in this classroom to redecorate the room how would you determine how may tiles you would need to buy to cover the floor? What math tools could we use to practice this skill today? Let's use our math schema and what we know about this to determine where we need to begin.
