Robert Dorn Operating Systems

Pros:

1

Free, open source, stable, fast, less bugs, more secure, hardly crash (excellent crash recovery app. if you need it), virtually no viruses or malware.

2

Highly customizable, you can make it look and operate just like Windows XP, Vista, 7 or Mac. However, you will need some time to figure out how.

Smartphone Operating Systems

iOS

Pros:, Multitasking – although not a full multitasking solution, Apple is now allowing certain apps to run in the background., Improved email – iOS 4 enhances the email experience by bringing unified inbox and threaded conversations to the iPhone.

Cons:, There is no jailbreak or unlock for iOS 4 yet, although the Dev Team confirmed these tools will be available soon., Most of the new features of iOS 4 can be replicated or even improved by jailbreak apps (see 7 ways jailbreaks apps can make iOS 4 jealous).

Android

Pros:, Most Android models have a removable battery, which allows users to purchase an extra battery and swap them out., All Android models have the ability to accept an SD card, allowing for expanded storage.

Cons:, Not all models have physical keyboards, which can render typing difficult., Most Android models have smaller screens than competing phones, such as the iPhone.

RIM

Pros:, Push Email Technology: This is currently available in most smartphones from companies like Nokia and Samsung. Push Email enables you to receive your emails in real time as soon as they hit your inbox., Data Compression: Without this feature, the purpose of a blackberry will be defeated in my own opinion. Techies have said that data transmitted via RIM servers to BlackBerry phones are compressed to almost half their size thereby saving you huge costs that could be accrued due to severe bandwidth depletion.

Cons:, Poor call quality in 3G mode: Depending on your network provider, you might have issues making calls when in 3G mode. I sure did have this issue on the Glo Network with my BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300., Depending on the model and OS of your blackberry phone, you could experience difficulty downloading large files of over 2.9MB to 4.8MB. This is quite frustrating especially when you don’t have access to your computer and you really need to download a software or pdf for immediate use.

Symbian

Pros:, Let’s recall that the phone has very high quality sound, captures HQ pictures and is strong with its connectivity too – when you insert the SIM it automoticaly configures itself for the right network – for AT&T and T-Mobile 3G networks. It helps the phone to provide crystal clear sound., The smartphone is equipped with a 12MP which records HD videos(the phone comes with wide codec and format support that even includes MKV files) which you can watch on TV connected via HDMI cable, though it has some problems when you try to quit the camera. The phone is also equipped with a 624MHz processor, 3.5 inch touchscreen. Though the phone has a good battery offering 12 hours of talk time and 50 hours of music playback, it will cut life to half a day if you push Microsoft Exchange e-mail.

Cons:, Nokia N8 is not OK mainly because of it’s Symbian^3 operating system. The Symbian^3 doesn’t work well with the touchscreen. Though it’s the newest OS provided by Nokia, its interface isn’t for touchscreens use. For example, the phone’s landscape-format virtual keyboard doesn’t even have a portrait QWERTY keyboard., Symbian OS is the fact that it takes four clicks to open a new web page, besides this the N8’s music layer takes a long time to scan the memory card for songs. The sync functionality allows the users to add Facebook, MySpace, Google or Twitter information to the contacts one at a time using an interface with several steps per contact. This isn’t everything, but I hope can help you make a decision whether it is the phone all we praised so much.

An operating system (OS) is software, consisting of programs and data, that runs on computers, manages computer hardware resources, and provides common services for execution of various application software.

PC Operating Systems

Ubuntu

Cons:, 1, Can’t install most software because most software are built for Windows and not Ubuntu, this mean you will have to use emulators to install Windows software to make it work on your Ubuntu system. Also, there is no guarantee if the emulator will work perfectly or not., 2, Many Windows video games cannot be install with Ubuntu since it is not built for games.

Ubuntu is a computer operating system based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution and is distributed as free and open source software with additional proprietary software available. It is named after the Southern African ethical principle Ubuntu ("humanity towards others"). Ubuntu provides an up-to-date, stable operating system for the average user, with a strong focus on usability and ease of installation. Web statistics suggest that Ubuntu's share of Linux desktop usage is about 50%, and upward trending usage as a web server. Ubuntu is sponsored by the UK-based company Canonical Ltd.

Windows 7

Pros:, It permits the user to disable the default digital media player of Microsoft which is the Windows Media Player., They have allowed access for media files to be streamed however this is possible only if both computers have Windows 7 as its operating system, Windows Live ID and internet connection.

Cons:, The cons of Windows 7 are its high cost and poor driver support., The minimum hardware requirement for Windows 7 to allow all of the features to function properly is a hard drive of 20GB for a 64-bit architecture and 1GHz processor which is very demanding for some users.

Mac OS X

Pros:, Easier to use for the non technical., More stable than Windows due to Apple’s tighter control over the configuration options and its UNIX base.

Cons:, More expensive upfront than other choices. Some would say this is offset by less maintenance required over the life of the system., Less hardware choices than Windows. For your average user this isn’t much of a problem. All the common hardware types will work.

The term open source describes practices in production and development that promote access to the end product's source materials.
