Media & Us by Mind Map: Media & Us

1. Makes us miss out on real life opportunities

1.1. In the panda is Dancing video the man was too busy paying attention to his online dating app rather than the woman on the street that was clearly checking him out.

1.1.1. In the Ted talk Tristan gives us the idea that people spent more time on a online dating site rather than actually going out on dates and spending time positively.

2. Creators are really trying to help users benefit from technology...but are they really?

2.1. GPS's are way quicker and easier than using a map, some apps even let you see your friends location so you always know where to find them. Isn't that sort've creepy and invades personal space?

2.1.1. In the Dancing panda video they show how Netflix asks you if you're "still there" and will even continue to play the next episode in a matter of seconds. This benefits us lazy people but also unconsciously makes us keep watching for longer than we planned to.

3. Social media draws us in and makes us addicted to being on our phones

3.1. Apps like Facebook will notice when you like a certain video or picture, and will start to show you similar things on your timeline to keep you scrolling and interested.

3.1.1. Once you share something of interest to your friends or post a picture, you get a good feeling when they comment back or like it. It makes you constantly jump overtime you get a notification an check who else from your friend list has seen it.

4. The layout of our phones affects our addiction

4.1. Having the icons that actually benefit our lives like a GPS or calculator on the front page will help us focus on whats important and not get distracted by media apps like snapchat or Instagram.

4.1.1. Personalizing notifications for people only and turning off ones from machines like games or subscriptions could keep us off our phones and procrastinating every time we get a notification
