How An Engine in a Car Works by Mind Map: How An Engine in a Car Works

1. 1. When an engine is running, the air and fuel enter the combustion chamber. the intake valve opens to allow air and fuel to fill the combustion chamber and the piston moves down on its first stroke. This is called the intake stroke.

2. 2. Next, the intake valve closes and moves in its 1st upward stroke compressing the air and fuel making it com-bust with greater force. This is called the compression stroke.

3. 4. Last, the piston begins its 2nd upward stroke and the exhaust valve opens forcing the ignited air/fuel mixture out of the combustion chamber through the exhaust valve.

3.1. This is known as the exhaust stroke.

4. 3. Third, the spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture causing it to burn explosively and forces the piston into its 2nd downward stroke.

4.1. This is known as the power stroke.
