1. Freud proposed that personality of three mental entities called id, ego, and superego.

2. id contains our baser animal drives and instinctual impulses, including hunger, thirst, eliminationation, sex, and aggression. The id stirs us action to ensure that our basic biological needs are met.

3. Ego operates according to the reality principle, basis for operating in the world taking into account what is practical and acceptable. Ego seeks ways to satisfy demands of id without incurring social disapproval.

4. Superego is our internal moral guardian or conscience. During childhood it splits off from ego, forming through a process of internalizing the moral teaching of parents or other significant figures.

5. The relatively stable constellation of psychological characteristicts and behavioral patterns that account for our individuality and consistency over time.
