The Founders & Christianity

1. The founding documents were not necessarily secular but neither extremely Christian either.

2. The constitution is very practical and does not have Christian based wording.

3. The founding fathers avoided specific religion as to not to offend anyone.

4. There was only a minority of evangelical Christians.

5. The major founders are not orthodox Christians. They believed in God but nervous about Jesus.

6. The treatment of minorities should be important to Christians because it is Biblical.

7. George Washington freed his slaves. Others did not.

8. American founders were horrible to Native Americans.

9. John Adams was intellectual and didn't fit in well. Intellectuals believed that God started creation and then stepped back.Adams was a very moral man.

10. Sam Adams is John's second cousin. He is very significant. Closest to Evangelicalism today. He was an outspoken Christian.

11. Thomas Jefferson was a man of massive contradictions. Born into privilege but very down to earth. He says he hates slavery but never releases his own slaves. Had an affair with a slave woman and hides his secret family away. Believed in Deism and created his own Bible.

12. Ben Franklin was known to be a philanderer, had many affairs and did not live a moral lifestyle. He believed in Deism.

13. George Washington was a very private man. Very moral man. He hate swearing and went to n episcopal church. Washington did not participate in communion. His followers wouldn't participate either. He believed in a God but never talks of Christ. Washington was probably a deist.

14. These men lived in a society were this type of moralism was the norm. They often quoted scripture but does not mean they were "Christians."
