1. If the word is short (one or two syllables), we simply add the ending -er:

1.1. soft (мягкий) – softer (мягче)

1.2. new (новый) – newer (новее)

1.3. tender (нежный) – tenderer (нежнее)

2. If the word already ends with -e, then add -r:

2.1. large (большой) – larger (больше)

2.2. polite (вежливый) – politer (вежливее)

2.3. white (белый) – whiter (белее)

3. If the word ends in a consonant, and before it is a vowel, then the consonant is doubled:

3.1. big (большой) – bigger (больше)

3.2. hot (горячий) – hotter (горячее)

3.3. fat (жирный) – fatter (жирнее)

4. If the end of the word is -y, and before it the consonant, then -y changes to -i:

4.1. easy (простой) – easier (проще)

4.2. happy (счастливый) – happier (счастливее)

4.3. dirty (грязный) – dirtier (грязнее)

5. For long adjectives, another rule applies. The word itself does not change in any way, but before it we put more (more):

5.1. beautiful (красивый) – more beautiful (более красивый)

5.2. difficult (сложный) – more difficult (более сложный)

5.3. interesting (интересный) – more interesting (более интересный)
