1. Canada's Role in the Cuban Missile Crisis

1.1. FOR

1.1.1. The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to starting a real war.

1.1.2. Canada didn't need to get involved in an American problem.

1.1.3. Canada was right to not have get involved as it could have further endangered us.

1.1.4. Diefenbaker was hesitant and wanted further proof, rather than just photographs.

1.2. AGAINST

1.2.1. Prime Minister Diefenbaker refused to believe the American photos as proof and wanted to get the United Nations involved instead.

1.2.2. The Cuban Missile Crisis damaged Canada-US relations.

1.2.3. Not only Americans but also many Canadians were angered by Diefenbaker's decision.

1.2.4. This crisis eventually became a world issue and Canada should have stepped up.

2. The Scrapping of the Avro Arrow

2.1. FOR

2.1.1. The Avro Arrow was decided to be too expensive and not worth the price.

2.1.2. Without the Avro Arrow, the government was able to spend money on other, more useful assets to the country.

2.1.3. If Canada had kept the Avro Arrow, the possibility of a war occurring would have been much higher.

2.1.4. If Canada had kept the Avro Arrow, taxes would have raised to pay for the expensive project.

2.2. AGAINST

2.2.1. Losing the Avro Arrow meant Canada lost their opportunity to become a technological leader.

2.2.2. The Avro Arrow could protect Canada in the event of an invasion from the north, from Russia.

2.2.3. Discontinuing the making of the Avro Arrow ended with about 15 000 employees without jobs.

2.2.4. After the cancellation of the Avro Arrow, many of Canada's scientist went to work for NASA in America.

3. Canada's Acceptance of Nuclear Weapons in 1963

3.1. FOR

3.1.1. Canada accepting nuclear weapons meant that Canada had a way of defending itself.

3.1.2. Accepting nuclear weapons gave Canada more power and status.

3.1.3. This new technology created more jobs.

3.1.4. So many countries having mutual advancement in technology in a sense actually stop the world from breaking out into a war.

3.2. AGAINST

3.2.1. Owning nuclear weapons was going against the United Nations.

3.2.2. Nuclear bombs had horrible aftermaths as seen in the Japanese bombings; the radiation is as dangerous as the explosion.

3.2.3. The possibility of a nuclear war and possible nuclear winter.

3.2.4. Nuclear weapons could accidentally be launched.
