Dams por Mind Map: Dams

1. Why they´re constructed?

1.1. 1.The dams give us hydroelectric power.

1.2. 2.Lots of dams provide water for growing crops and for farm animals to drink.

1.3. 3.They store water for fighting fires and can help control floods.

2. Three Gorges Dam

2.1. Environmental Problems

2.1.1. 1. Increase in landslide activity: Primary cause from erosion (caused by the drastic increases and decreases in reservoir water levels).

2.1.2. 2. Affect biodiversity in the area: Animal and plant life has been greatly threatened due to flooding in some habitats and water diversion in others (Causing Fragmentation).

2.1.3. 3. The Dam may have been tied to major earthquakes: By placing tremendous pressure and fluctuation on the underlying geological plates.

2.2. Social or Cultural Issues

2.2.1. 1. The Chinese society has been the displacement of millions of people from the Yangtze river region.

2.2.2. 2. Societal stress: -180,000 protests per year in China.

2.2.3. 3.Structural Violence: Is characterized by the oppression of disadvantaged people at the hands of cultural, political, legal, or economic practices and tradition. -The state regime is committing acts of structural violence by forcing Chinese citizens out of their homes and into generally much worse situations, into poverty and degradation.

2.3. Solutions

2.3.1. In my opinion, the actions that China´s government should have taken to reduce the negative impact of the dam are: They had promise several stuff to increase the way the displaced residents live. They had invest more capital in the structure or maintenance of the dams. They should make the solutions basing their actions in the sustainability of the planet.
