1. Background Information

1.1. District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) serves more than 4,200 ELL students. The students come from 133 different countries and speak 107 different languages. ELL students receive services that help them attain English Language proficiency and be academically successful.

1.2. District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) has five different types of programs available for ELL. Content-Based English as a Second Language (ESL) program, Dual Language Education Programs, Secondary Newcomer Literacy Program, Sheltered Content, and Opting Out.

1.3. The two programs that our group will be discussing are: Content-Based English as a Second Language (ESL) programs and Secondary Newcomer Literacy Program.

1.4. ELL Students

2. Content-Based English as a Second Language (ESL) Programs

2.1. This program is the academic content areas of English/Language Arts, social studies, science, and mathematics are used as the vehicle for language learning and to ensure that students master academic content and performance standards. Instruction is primarily in English, although native language support is provided when necessary and when possible. These classes are taught by ESL-certified teachers.

2.2. Common Core State Standards and Objectives:

2.3. CCSS.ELA-Literacy. L2.3: Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening. *CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L2.3.A: Compare formal and informal uses of English.

2.4. Objective: Student will be able to understand the meaning of words used in a sentence that is unfamiliar to them.

2.5. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.2.1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

2.6. Objective: Student will be able to ask and answer “WH” questions after reading or being read to aloud and identify three supporting details of the story.

2.7. Content- Based ESL Programs

3. Secondary Newcomer Literacy Program

3.1. This program supports those immigrant students who come to DCPS with a limited formal education background and prepares them to become successful both in school and in the post-secondary world. Classes provide students with core academic and literacy skills and knowledge that address gaps in their prior education. This is a full-day intensive program that focuses on literacy development, language acquisition, and mastery of academic content. There are only two schools in DCPS that has this program McFarland MS and Roosevelt SHS.

3.3. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L2.4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies. *CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L2.4.A: Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.

3.4. Objective: Student will be able to use context clues to help determine the meaning of a unfamiliar word or a word that has multiple meanings.

3.5. CCSS.ELA-Literacy. L.2.2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. *CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.2.A Capitalize holidays, product names, and geographic names.

3.6. Objective: Student will be able to understand the meaning of word using the context clues in the sentence to help determine the meaning.

4. Teacher Strategies for All Standards

4.1. o ESL students will be weakest in auditory learning. Teachings need to provide illustrations, dramatic gestures, actions, emotions, voice variety, blackboard sketches, photo demonstrations, and hands on materials.

4.2. o Make lessons comprehensible and memorable

4.3. o Let ESL students know they are included

4.4. o Make eye contact with your ESL students, mention their names during your reading or presentation, smile occasionally, stand near their desks

4.5. o Create social context for learning

4.6. o Pair or group the ESL students with other students so they are not isolated

4.7. o Have a bilingual dictionary in your classroom is important

4.8. o Tailor the assignments to fit the ability of the student

4.9. o Adjust and limit the reading assignments
