2.6. How is Comprehension Measured

2.6.1. The District of Columbia Public Schools uses “Text Reading Comprehension” TRC to measure kindergarten students’ comprehension level. This assessment is inclusive of Special Education Student as well as English Language Learners. TRC is an assessment that is individually administered through the aid of leveled readers from a book set to determine a student’s instructional reading level. Students during this assessment, read an authentic piece of literature and must complete a battery of follow up questions related to the text read which involves oral comprehension, recalling or retelling. The teacher in charge of administrating the assessment must record student’s oral reading responses to determine comprehension accuracy. This process helps teachers determine whether the student understand the meaning of the text read. In this study, TRC assessment will be the instrument utilized to measure reading comprehension.
