1. The Arts

1.1. Drama

1.1.1. When the girl arrives to the castle there are people around. Students get into groups of 5 and reenact this scene. ACADRM035

1.1.2. Students will be given a page to them. They must construct the words for a page. As a group, students will perform the page to their peers. ACADRM037

1.1.3. In groups of 4, students will imagine more of the story. They must improvise an alternative or continued ending to their peers. ACADRM036

1.2. Dance

1.2.1. As a class, students will discuss the themes of the text. Students, in groups of 4, must choose one of the themes and construct a dance to convey this theme. ACADAM009

1.2.2. Students express a movement piece through the change of scene from the beginning in her home to when she opens the door. ACADAM009

1.2.3. One half of the class construct a dance from when the young girl is at home, feeling sad. The other half constructs a dance of when she enters the door. Both groups present their dance. Later, they reflect and discuss the contrast. ACADAM009

1.3. Media

1.3.1. The perspective in the text is from the young girl. Each group will take a different character's point of view. They will use iPads to display their characters' perspective from the story. ACAMAM062

1.4.2. One half of the class construct a composition from when the young girl is at home. The other half constructs a composition of when she enters the new world. Both groups present their compositions. Later, they reflect and discuss the contrast. ACAMUM090

1.5. Visual Arts

1.5.1. Students imagine they are the young girl. She draws a door and enters a new world. Students use oil pastels that will help them construct their world based on their imagination. ACAVAM116

1.5.2. Students create a collage using textures, newspaper, magazines and paper to display the mood of a particular scene in the text. ACAVAM115

1.5.3. Students notice and discuss the use of colour within the text. Students will reconstruct this idea of contrasting colours. They will recreate an image from the text using chalk. They must use colour for all objects. Once complete, they discuss if colour has changed the mood. ACAVAM114

2. English

2.1. Literacy

2.1.1. Students choose a text structure of their choice to convey the story in a different way. Students can choose to write a narrative, create a movie or using a storyboard. The purpose is to convey the same story but using a different text structure. ACELY1704

2.1.2. In the text there are no words. However, the text still maintains a first person point of view. Students will discuss how the author has conveyed this point of view without using words. Specifically, how the author has used art to convey this. ACELY1698

2.2. Language

2.2.1. Students have been previously studying Shaun Tan's "The Arrival". They will construct a comparison of texts by creating a poster to display defining points of difference. ACELA1504

2.2.2. Students discuss how the text is constructed. Specifically, how the text follows a narrative structure without words. ACELA1797

2.3. Literature

2.3.1. There are no words on the pages. Each group will get a different set of pages. As a group, students will write the words to the page. ACELT1611

2.3.2. Students imagine they are in the young girls shoes. They must think what they would do differently. How would their story play out? Students will create a storybook of their own. ACELT1610
