1. Swing

1.1. Performers/Composers: Charlie Johnson, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Count Basie

1.2. Music Characteristics: Swing music began in the 1920's, but the Swing Era didn't start until 1935. It started off in New Orleans, then moved to Chicago, and then New York. It was less improvised by previous jazz music with a homophonic texture. This made it the most popular period of jazz music.

2. Early Jazz

2.1. Performers/Composers: Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, and Jelly Roll Morton

2.2. Music Characteristics: Early Jazz has also been called Dixieland. It started off in New Orleans and lasted from 1900 to 1928. Each instrument was given a specific role and was improvisational. Simple harmonies were played which provided a base for improvisation skills. Eventually jazz migrated to Chicago and New York, allowing for it to be transformed into all different forms, like Bebop and Swing.

3. Bebop

3.1. Performers/Composers: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Thelonious Monk

3.2. Music Characteristics: The Bebop period was from 1940 to 1955. It was made more to listen to rather than for dancing. It was centered in NYC with performances from smaller groups. This style consists of a lot of improvisation.

4. Blues

4.1. Performers/Composers: Charley Patton, Mamie Smith, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Howlin' Wolf

4.2. Music Characteristics: Blues is a solo song that's improvised by the performer. It has a 12-bar, three-line song form and eventually added solos for the instruments as well. If it was a vocal performance, the lyrics often told a story.

5. Ragtime

5.1. Performers/Composers: Scott Joplin, James Scott, Joseph Lamb, and William Bolcom

5.2. Music Characteristics: Ragtime was printed music so it was to be played the same way each time. It was mostly played using the piano with 16 segments split into four different

6. Brass

6.1. Performers/Composers: John Philip Sousa, Edward Gregson, Charles Trussell, and Kenneth Downie

6.2. Music Characteristics: Brass bands are typically made up of a tuba, trombones, trumpets, clarinet, snare drum, bass drum, and sometimes a saxophone. It was played for all types of occasions including burials, parades, and other community organizations. Bands ranged from about 12 to 17 musicians, each having an assigned role.
