Infinitive of purpose

1. Usiamo la forma di un verbo all'infinito (to + verbo base) quando vogliamo spiegare il motivo di una nostra azione

1.1. I read books to kill the time

2. Praticamente uniamo due frasi separate che sarebbero logicamente corrette anche da sole

2.1. She laid in the sun. She wanted to relax -) She laid in the sun to relax

3. Nel linguaggio formale si usano anche espressioni come "in order to + verbo" oppure "so as to + verbo"

3.1. I studied Russian in order to work in Moscow

3.2. He slightly changed the text so as to avoid a rigid interpretation.

4. "In order to" e "so as to" sono obbligatori quando vogliamo introdurre una frase negativa

4.1. I studied at night in order to not fail the test NON SI DICE I studied at night to not fail the test

5. A differenza dall'italiano non si introduce un infinitive of purpose con "for"

5.1. I buy wares in local shops to help people I know NON SI DICE I buy wares in local shop for help people I know
