2.1. The Four Stages of Cognitive Development, Background and Key Concepts of Piaget's Theory. By: Kendra Cherry. Medically reviewed by a board-certified physician. Updated May 20, 2019. Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development suggests that children move through four different stages of mental development. His theory focuses not only on understanding how children acquire knowledge, but also understanding the nature of intelligence. Piaget's stages are: 1. Sensorimotor stage: birth to 2 years 2. Preoperational stage: 2 to 7 years old 3. Concrete operational stage: ages 7 to 11 4. Formal operational stage 12 and up.

2.1.1. The Sensorimotor Stage of Cognitive Development By: Kendra Cherry , updated May 20, 2019. The sensorimotor stage is the earliest in Piaget's theory of cognitive development. He describes this period as a time of tremendous growth and change. During this initial phase of development, children utilize skills and abilities they were born with ( such as looking, sucking, grasping, and listening) to learn more about the environment.
